Packet Information
Available here are pattern packets for designs painted in oils, as well as books and packets for fabric painting on "linens and lace" using DEKA Permanent Fabric Paints (a dye-type, water-based paint). Sadly, DEKA Paints are no longer available in the United States, but all instructional materials written for DEKA now also include a conversion chart for DecoArt SoSoft Fabric Paints. A wide assortment of beautiful paintable 'linens", my favorite brushes, and other goodies may also be purchased here.
While a few of the oil paintings are completed "wet-on-wet", most employ the method of glazing with additional transparent or semi-transparent layers over the dry underpainting.
The fabric-painted designs utilize a semi-transparent technique where the white or off-white of the fabric forms light and highlight areas of objects.
Packets contain:
- Thorough, well-written instructions.
- Supply lists, including complete ordering information for the painting surface (though availability may change without notice!). Line drawings may be resized on a copy machine, or by other means, to fit an alternate surface.
- 4"x6" color photo(s) and/or full-size color photo pages.
- Newer oil packets include a "color swatch" photo or printed color chart of the basic mixes used in the painting.
- A few of the oil packets contain a First Stage photo (the painting before it's been glazed).
- Instructions normally include detailed diagrams for value placement.
- Books, magazine articles, and some packets include color step-by-steps illustrating the painting techniques used.
- More recent oil packets contain Tru-Color System (TCS) numbers for easier conversion of colors to an alternate brand or medium.
- When a skill level is suggested, this is simply my "best guess", and is included only as a guideline to aid in choosing a design. For instance, an oil packet designated Intermediate means I feel it would be suitable for an intermediate level OIL painter who is fairly proficient with the medium and the various techniques associated with it.
- HOWEVER, it may be just as suitable for the intermediate level painter in acrylics or Genesis who has an understanding of color conversion from oils to the alternate medium, as well as any different techniques that might be required by the use of that alternate medium.
